Strengths: Big frame but he’s smooth as a route runner. Glides through routes and is cognizant of his plus fluidity. Able to win at the catch point his strong hands. An underrated route runner and player after the catch. Adjusts to the ball nicely when the pass is off. Will bail out his quarterback despite contact or a busy area. Capable of breaking a game open with his physical gifts. Surprisingly polished on his routes considering what Auburn asked him to do. Can take hard hits over the middle and finishes plays at an acceptable rate.
Weaknesses: Obvious concern is with a simplified offense. He ran a fairly basic route tree, but does at least have tape where he had to win with footwork at the top of his routes. Most of his production came from the slot, but that may have been due to poor QB play and inability to take advantage of his outside matchups. Not much effort or awareness as a blocker despite his size and strength. Occasional drops despite good positioning. Allows the ball to get too far into his frame at times. Not sure if it’s because he runs so effortlessly or if he isn’t playing hard, but his play speed fluctuates.
Outlook: Williams is a good athlete considering his plus-frame and height. He moves in a smooth fashion, which makes his speed somewhat deceptive. He has considerable upside as a starting receiver, whether it be in the slot or outside. His lack of effort blocking or on routes where he isn’t a primary target is alarming. Obviously his dismissal from Auburn raises major questions. That won’t affect his value too much in my grading scale, but it is a big red flag for teams to consider.
Williams is a classic mid-round flier. He has the talent to be a solid contributor, if not more, but it’s somewhat unlikely he reaches the potential he at times showed. His best fit is a situation he can ease in as the third receiver, and grow into the second option in time.
Value: 7.45 (4th round)
